Brave Barista Discovers An Ingenious Way To Encourage Coffee Shop Customers To Be More Polite
You will have heard the old saying that ‘manners cost nothing’.
But what is the actual value of being polite?
In today’s fast paced society simple manners like greeting coffee shop staff and saying please and thank you are often overlooked by time-poor customers.
But these simple little gestures can make all the difference to not only your own day but to those around you too.
You have probably experienced exceptional customer service that has instantly lifted your mood and improved your day.
So why not turn the tables and be an exceptional customer by delighting the staff you encounter throughout your day?
One brave coffee shop owner has discovered an ingenious way to encourage his customers to become more polite.
At his coffee shop, you’ll be charged a huge $5 if you snappily order your drink. Add a little politeness to your tone by saying, ” small coffee, please,” and the price drops to $3! And if you want to order your drink in a way that would make your mother proud, with a greeting and a “please,” you only have to pay $1.75.
Austin Simms is the man behind the idea, which started off as a joke…
“I decided, because I need to solve all the injustices of the world, to start charging more for people who didn’t take the time to say hello and connect and realise we’re all people behind the counter.”
But this joke quickly turned into reality when he placed this sign outside of his coffee shop.

Watch this short clip (1 min) to see Austin being interviewed about his big idea.
Austin clearly believes that kindness can go a long way and is willing to reward it. A sentiment that we totally agree with at Coffee Pod Shop.
But not everybody agrees. Some people have been critical of the sign as the news has gone viral.
Do you agree with Austin’s tactics, or is it not his place to tell customers how they should speak to their baristas? Tell us how you feel in the comments below.
